Caliban The Monster

Starshine Music has adapted this scene from ‘The Tempest’ to make a useful short presentation for Shakespeare Week (held annually during March) and for literacy work in general.

Caliban was the original inhabitant of an island, son of a witch called Sycorax. When Prospero and Miranda first arrived on the island, Caliban lived with them. However, after Caliban attacked Miranda, Prospero enslaved him and now he uses magic to control him.  Caliban hates Prospero and is looking for a way to overthrow him...

The scene (one song and 7-minute script) introduces some of the main characters of ‘The Tempest’, as well as demonstrating that the musical is accessible and straightforward to stage. Most of the script is written in contemporary English, as are all the lyrics. Optional extracts from Shakespeare’s original are included. These may be used to add an authentic flavour to the play. They appear as boxed text and can be inserted or omitted without impact on the integrity of the rest of the action.

Download includes:  Script, Lyrics Sheet, PPT Lyrics Slideshow, Vocal Demonstration and Instrumental Backing Tracks.  Also includes a Shakespeare Week Certificate for participants.  Supporting resources from the Shakespeare Week website can be found here.
